The "Unfinished Wings" Project started by accident, one day, when I was preparing to leaving this earth. I didn’t believe I could keep going. As I was planning my Earthly Exit, I had an image of beautiful wings come to my mind. An image I couldn’t get out of my thoughts. I knew I had to create them. So, I started making the wings as a way of marking that moment—what I believed to be a ‘final act’, a symbolic gesture of where I was planning to go. But I felt that I couldn’t leave until I finished them. I worked for days and nights, until the front of the wings was finished, and for a brief moment, I felt light—not healed, not fixed, but just “O.K.” enough to stay. I felt a desire to share that light-that hope- with others. So, I put on the unfinished wings and photographed them and shared them on social media. And I stayed.
I never finished the back of the wings. I left them unfinished because, like me, they were incomplete. Half done. I’m not finished.
As other very dark times came, I started creating a collection of “Unfinished Dresses” as a way to survive suicidal episodes. Each dress is artistically created with handmade detail, as I search for light and try to create beauty in the midst of darkness.
I have been honored to bring this story and my “living” collection of imperfect, impractical dresses to an Arts Alliance Mental Awareness Event, Switzerland Fashion Week March 2025, and to Paris for a Press interview and Eifel Tower Photo Shoot. As well as having my story covered in Idaho and Utah News agencies.
I have been invited to continue this awareness journey on the runways of Cannes Festival Fashion Week May 2025 and Paris Couture Week July 2025, as well as New York Fashion Week September 2025. Pending necessary funding.
Each event, runway, podcast or press interview brings a unique opportunity for me to share my ongoing struggles living with Suicidality, and associated Depression and Anxiety. I am still “In It, Not Through It” And I want to encourage others who are still in the middle of their storms to keep walking, keep reaching, find support by speaking while they are still fighting. My greatest hope it to help open more conversations around mental illness, to help those who don’t understand to see and to bring light and hope to those who feel so alone. And a message that they can STAY.
